Tour itinerary

Pick up from Cusco and transportation to Ollantaytambo Station

The Machu Picchu 1-day afternoon tour starts in the city of Cusco (3,399 meters above sea level) with the pick up of the visitor at the door of his hotel (prior coordination). Unlike the classic tours where the pick up is at 5 am or before; in this tour, the pick up is at approximately 7 am. Then, on board a tourist minivan, the visitor will be transferred, to the center of Cusco, to the Wánchaq station (El Sol Avenue). At the Wánchaq station, the visitor will board one of Peru Rail’s comfortable Bimodal buses. In these buses, you travel for almost 2 hours to the town of Ollantaytambo. On the route, you will be able to appreciate the beautiful landscapes of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

From Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes (Machupicchu town)

The bus trip ends at the train station in the town of Ollantaytambo (2,792 masl). Before boarding the train, you have a time available of approximately 30 minutes. It is recommended, in case you do not already have one, to buy a rain poncho, sunblock, or mosquito repellent. Once on board the Peru Rail Expedition train, the visitor will enjoy a comfortable and safe trip of 1 hour and 40 minutes on average. The train includes comfortable seats, tables, large windows (to appreciate the beautiful Andean landscape), space for luggage, background music with travel information, toilets, and staff on board selling snacks and drinks.

From Aguas Calientes to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu

The train trip ends at the station in the town of Aguas Calientes (2,040 meters above sea level). This town is small but has a wide range of tourist services such as hotels, cafes, restaurants, and more. In the town of Aguas Calientes, the visitor will have approximately 1 hour to have lunch (not included in the tour). In the town there are many options, all of good quality. After lunch, the tourist will board the ecological bus that will take approximately 30 minutes to the entrance of the archaeological site of Machu Picchu. The bus ride is comfortable and safe. It has large windows to appreciate the beautiful landscapes of high green mountains that are the perfect prelude to the visit to Machu Picchu.

The visit to Machu Picchu in the afternoon

The visitor will arrive at the entrance gate of Machu Picchu around 2 pm. The entrance to the Inca city at that time is with fewer visitors around. In addition, the landscape in the afternoon looks clearer (less chance of rain). The chosen circuit in Machu Picchu is ‘circuit 2’. This tour includes a visit to most of the Inca constructions, such as the Temple of the Sun, the Main Temple, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, the agricultural sector, the water fountains, and more. In the circuit, you have the opportunity to visit the sector of the Guardian’s House. From there you can get the classic photos of Machu Picchu. Along the route, the tour guide will provide you with the necessary information to understand the great historical value of Machu Picchu. The guide will also help you get the best pictures of the place. The Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in the afternoon offers a memorable experience, with beautiful landscapes and a lot of peace around. The tour takes 2 hours and 30 minutes on average. At the end of the visit, you will not be able to re-enter.

Return to Aguas Calientes and free time

After the visit to Machu Picchu, at about 4.30 pm the return trip is made by Consettur ecological bus to the town of Aguas Calientes. In the town of Aguas Calientes, the visitor will have some free time to walk through the streets of the place. It is recommended to shop at the artisan market or get pictures next to the sculptures with Inca motifs of the place. Thirty minutes before the departure time of the train, the visitor must enter the Aguas Calientes station.

Return trip from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo

The train chosen for the return trip is also in Expedition service. This train, as on the outbound trip, includes comfortable seats, tables, large windows, space for luggage, and on-board service with snacks and beverages. The trip lasts 1 hour 40 minutes and stands out for its great comfort on board. The arrival station is in the town of Ollantaytambo.

Travel to Cusco and final transfer to the visitor’s hotel.

In Ollantaytambo, a few steps from the station, the visitor must board the Peru Rail Bimodal bus. The trip to Cusco takes almost 2 hours and ends at the Wánchaq station in the historic center of the city. At the exit door of the station, an assistant will be waiting for the visitor to provide the final transfer service to the door of your hotel. The tour ends at approximately 10 pm.
