Tour itinerary
DAY 1: DEPARTURE FROM CUSCO AND OVERNIGHT STAY IN SORAYPAMPA
Pick up and travel to starting point
The first day of the tour begins with the pick up of the visitor from the door of his hotel in the city of Cusco at 4 am on average. On board of a tourist minivan we will take a 3 hour trip to the town of Mollepata, located 101 kilometers from Cusco. In this village we stop for breakfast (first breakfast not included in the tour).
Hike to Soraypampa and visit to Humantay
After breakfast, the trip continues in tourist transport for 40 minutes more until arriving at the starting point of the Salkantay trek. The visitor will be able to leave five kilos of his luggage to the horses and the muleteer to begin the route of twelve kilometers to the camp of Soraypampa, at 3,900 meters above sea level. There we enjoy a refreshing lunch prepared by our professional cooks. In the afternoon we make a 2 kilometers uphill trip to the Humantay lagoon (4,200 masl), one of the most beautiful landscapes of Cusco. Then it’s time to return to Soraypampa camp.
Overnight in Soraypampa
The first day you will travel a total of 16 kilometers. The weather on the first night is cold (around 2ºC.) because it is surrounded by high snow-capped mountains. After dinner the visitor will camp in a comfortable lodge with views of the stars. It is recommended to bring a sleeping bag (not included in the tour).
DAY 2: ASCENT TO THE SALKANTAY PASS AND OVERNIGHT STAY IN CHAULLAY
Ascent to the Salkantay Pass
The second day begins with a breakfast in charge of our cooks. Then, an arduous hike uphill to reach the highest point of the route, in the Salkantay pass (4,600 meters above sea level). There you will get some of the best pictures of the adventure.
Lunch at Huayrac camp
After reaching the highest point, it is time to descend through a special high Andean geography that progressively becomes greener and greener. At the Huayrac camp, after approximately two hours of descent on foot, we stop to enjoy a tourist lunch.
Route to Collpampa and overnight stay
After lunch we will continue our descent on foot through a more tropical geography and surrounded by high green mountains. At Collpampa camp we will stop for dinner. There, the climate is temperate, with an average night temperature of 8ºC. The visitor will rest in a camping eco lodge, surrounded by a beautiful geography. The route that day is approximately 15 kilometers.
DAY 3: VISIT TO THE CUSCO JUNGLE AND OVERNIGHT STAY IN SANTA TERESA
Hiking in the high jungle of Cusco
On the third day, after a nutritious and delicious breakfast, we begin a beautiful hike through the landscapes of the high jungle of Cusco. The visitor will be able to appreciate a great variety of fruits, especially passion fruit, avocado, apples and peaches, until arriving at the campsite of La Playa where we enjoy a delicious tourist lunch surrounded by a wonderful landscape full of greenery.
Visit to Phuyupatamarca
We continue with the route with ascending, descending and flat stretches, always along the beautiful Inca roads (qhapac ñan). Through a rocky road with a last uphill stretch we arrive at the archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca, where a few visitors camp. However, we will continue along the Inca trails to get closer and closer to Machu Picchu.
Visit to the thermal baths of Cocalmayo.
In the afternoon, optionally, but highly recommended, you have the opportunity to enjoy the relaxing thermal baths of Cocalmayo in the town of Santa Teresa. In addition, also optionally, the visitor can practice zip-lining in a special geography with green mountains and abundant flora. The practice of this sport and the visit to the hot springs are with an extra payment on the same day of the tour.
Overnight at La Playa Campground
At La Playa camp the tourist can relax in its facilities near the river. In the evening the visitor will enjoy a delicious tourist dinner. That day you will walk a total of 16 kilometers but all on flat and beautiful downhill trails. The weather at night will be humid and tropical with an average temperature of 12ºC.
DAY 4: ROUTE TO HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT AND OVERNIGHT STAY IN AGUAS CALIENTES
Visit to the Inca site of Llactapata
The fourth day is perhaps the most difficult because, after breakfast, there is an arduous uphill hike to the archaeological site of Llactapata (route of approximately 3 hours). There, always accompanied by the tour guide, the visitor will learn more about the Inca culture.
Hike to Hidroeléctrica
After visiting Llactapata we make an arduous descent (trekking poles are recommended) until we reach the banks of the Vilcanota River. There we continue the hike to the famous Hydroelectric station, where the visitor will enjoy a tourist lunch in one of the local restaurants. Then a 10 kilometers walk next to the train rails and the Vilcanota River until arriving at the town of Aguas Calientes, also called Machu Picchu village because it is located just 10 kilometers from the Inca citadel.
Overnight stay in Aguas Calientes, Machupicchu village
In Aguas Calientes the visitor, for the first time on the tour, will stay in a tourist hotel (standard 2 star service). After settling in and a relaxing bath, it is time to enjoy a tourist dinner at a local restaurant in town. In the evening, after the briefing, the visitor will rest because the next day is the long awaited visit to the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.
DAY 5: VISIT TO MACHU PICCHU AND RETURN TO CUSCO BY TRAIN
Trekking or bus route to Machu Picchu
The fifth and last day of the tour begins with a nutritious breakfast in the hotel dining room. Then, the tourist will decide whether to ascend Machu Picchu on foot or with a tourist bus. The walking route takes 2 hours and is uphill by stone steps. The bus route takes only 30 minutes. If the visitor chooses to walk, he/she should leave earlier than the visitor who takes the bus.
Sightseeing in Machu Picchu
Upon arrival at Machu Picchu, the group will enter with their tour guide who accompanied them throughout the adventure of the Salkantay trek. The touristic route through Machu Picchu includes the visit to the main Inca constructions, such as the Temple of the Sun, the Main Temple, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, the agricultural sector and more. It is not allowed to go back but the route is with patience, learning about each building and taking the best possible pictures. In total the route through the archaeological site of Machu Picchu takes 2 hours 30 minutes. The visit to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain is optional for an additional cost. Then it is time to leave the Inca citadel.
Return to Cusco by train
At the exit gate of Machu Picchu the visitor must take the bus that in 30 minutes will take him to the town of Aguas Calientes. If the tourist booked the buffet lunch at the 5 star hotel Sanctuary Lodge (optional in the tour), he/she must stay next to the archaeological site to enter the restaurant and enjoy the buffet service. Otherwise you should return to Aguas Calientes and have lunch on your own in one of the many high quality tourist restaurants there. In Machupcchu town (Aguas Calientes), at the time indicated by the tour guide, you will take the Expedition tourist train. The trip lasts 1 hour 40 minutes through the Vilcanota valley until arriving at the town of Ollantaytambo. Finally, in the town of Ollantaytambo you have to take the tourist bus that in almost 2 hours will take you back to Cusco. At the Wánchaq station an assistant will be waiting for the visitor to take him to the door of his hotel where the tour ends (approximately at 9 pm).
