Tour itinerary
DAY 1
Pick-up and drop-off from Cusco to Hydroelectric
The ‘2 Day Economic Machu Picchu Tour’ starts with the visitor being picked up at the door of their hotel in the historic center of Cusco at approximately 7 am. If your hotel is not in this area of the city (most tourist hotels are); you will have to wait for the pick up in a central square such as Plaza Regocijo (a few steps from the Plaza de Armas). The trip will be aboard a tourist minivan that in 5 hours will take you from the city of Cusco to the hydroelectric station in the jungle of the region. During the route, stops are made to use toilets or buy snacks in the towns of Ollantaytambo and Santa Maria. After a long but full of beautiful scenery trip, we arrive at the Hydroelectric station, famous for its proximity to Machu Picchu.
Lunch and hike to Aguas Calientes
At the hydroelectric station, the visitor will get off the vehicle to have lunch at a local tourist restaurant. Lunch is included. Although there is no guide to accompany the visitor, the driver of the vehicle will indicate the easy route to follow to the town of Aguas Calientes. This is an enjoyable hike, surrounded by beautiful scenery, in a straight line to the train track and the Vilcanota River. The hike is known as the ‘cheapest route to Machu Picchu’. It crosses approximately 10 kilometers (on average it takes 2 hours of walking) and ends in the town of Aguas Calientes, also called Machu Picchu village because of its proximity to the Inca citadel.
Dinner and overnight stay in Aguas Calientes
In the town of Aguas Calientes (2,040 meters above sea level) the visitor will have to walk (there are no cabs or public transportation in the small town) to his previously selected tourist hotel. The tourist hotel is a standard 2-star service that includes all the amenities, such as furniture, hot shower, towels, shampoo, cable TV, wifi internet access, cleanliness, and comfort. At night the tourist must visit the tourist restaurant previously coordinated. Dinner is a tourist service that offers famous dishes of Peruvian gastronomy, such as lomo saltado, grilled alpaca, huancaína potato, and more. Then, in the lobby of your hotel, the visitor will receive the visit of your tour guide who will provide full information about the route to Machu Picchu that will follow on day 2 of the tour. Finally, the tourist will rest at the tourist hotel in Aguas Calientes.
DAY 2
Breakfast and bus to Machu Picchu
Early in the morning, the visitor can have breakfast in the dining room of the tourist hotel in Aguas Calientes. Breakfast is an American-style service that includes bread, jam, butter, milk, yogurt, fruits, coffee, cereals, and more. Then the guide will wait for the visitor for a short walk to the town’s bus station. There, normally, there is a 10-minute queue to board the Consettur ecological buses to Machu Picchu. The bus ride takes 30 minutes. The travelers are all seated contemplating the beautiful tropical mountain scenery that is a prelude to Machu Picchu. The final stop is at the entrance gate of Machu Picchu.
Tour of Machu Picchu with tour guide
At the entrance gate of Machu Picchu, the visitor can use the restrooms before entering with the rest of the group to the Inca archaeological site. The tour of Machu Picchu is by ‘Circuit 2’. This route is the most recommended because it includes the visit to most of the Inca temples, as well as the classic photo in the sector of the House of the Guardian. The circuit begins with a stretch of stone steps to reach the Guardian’s House (classic photos of the place). Then it continues through the main temples such as the Temple of the Sun, the Main Temple, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, the Water Fountains, the terraces, and more. The tour guide will accompany the visitor for 2 hours and 30 minutes solving all their doubts and helping to get the best pictures. The tour ends where it began: at the entrance and exit gate of Machu Picchu.
Return by bus to Aguas Calientes
After visiting Machu Picchu the tourist must board one of the Consettur tourist buses that in 30 minutes will take him to the town of Aguas Calientes. As the route is to Hydroelectric, the visitor can request to get off before Aguas Calientes, at the height of the bridge to make the hike (you can consult with the bus driver). Another option is to descend directly to Aguas Calientes to have lunch in a tourist restaurant (not included in the tour) before starting the hike.
Hike from Aguas Calientes to the hydroelectric plant
The hike to the hydroelectric station follows the same route as the previous day’s trip. The hike is on flat but cobblestone sections, so sturdy-soled shoes are recommended. The hike takes approximately 2 hours. It is also recommended to bring a hat, mosquito repellent, a rain poncho, and an extra polo shirt (you will sweat during the hike) as well as snacks and rehydrating drinks. The hike is easy to follow – there are many visitors following the route – so it is very difficult to get lost. The final stop will be at the hydroelectric station.
Travel from Hydroelectric to Cusco
At the hydroelectric stop, the vehicles will be waiting for the visitors. At approximately 2.30 pm, they leave for the city of Cusco on a journey of approximately 5 hours. During the trip, there will be strategic stops to use restrooms and to buy snacks or rehydrating drinks. The trip leads to the city of Cusco where the service concludes in a central square of the city at approximately 8 pm.
