This is the Machu Picchu Special Tour in Wheelchair
Tour itinerary
Pick up in Cusco city and transfer to Ollantaytambo
The ‘Machu Picchu Special Wheelchair Tour’ starts with the pick up of the visitor at the door of his hotel in Cusco by the guide and the assistant guide. The pick-up is at approximately 5 am. The transportation is a spacious private minivan only for the tourist and his private group of companions, friends, couples, or family. After the pickup, the guide and the assistant will provide the necessary help to board the minivan and make a 1 hour 40 minutes trip to the train station in Ollantaytambo. The route is full of beautiful landscapes.
Expedition train ride to Aguas Calientes
At the Ollantaytambo train station (2,792 masl) the tourist will be transferred by the guide or a trusted companion. Then you will have a free time of 30 minutes to access the restrooms or enjoy a snack or drink before boarding the train. The train does not have easy access ramps, but you will be assisted by Peru Rail staff. In addition, the tourist will have the help of the guide and the assistant guide to board the Expedition train. The train does not have space for wheelchairs, but it does have comfortable seats, tables, and large windows to admire the beautiful scenery of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The train includes toilet facilities, space for luggage, on-board assistance, and snacks and beverages. After a journey of 1 hour 40 minutes, you arrive at the train station of Aguas Calientes, also called Machupicchu village because of its proximity to the Inca citadel.
Bus trip from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu
In Aguas Calientes (2,040 m.a.s.l.) the tourist will descend with the help of the guide and the guide’s assistant. Then there is a short trip to the town’s bus station (the streets do have ramps and facilities for wheelchair access). The tourist will board the Consettur bus with the help of the guide and assistant guide. The Consettur bus also does not have ramps or space for wheelchairs inside. Despite the difficulties, the tourist, with the support of the guide team, will travel for 30 minutes to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu.
Special tour in Machu Picchu
At the entrance gate to Machu Picchu, the tourists will have some free time to access the restrooms. Then we proceed to the entrance to Machu Picchu to make the special circuit 4, which, for safety reasons, crosses the most appropriate sectors for the visit in wheelchairs. Circuit 4 includes some complicated stretches of stairs. However, with the help of the guide and the guide’s assistant, the tourist will manage to overcome them and access a point with a beautiful view of the Inca citadel. The tourist will be accompanied by his private guide knowing the history of the Inca citadel and, in addition, getting the best pictures of the place. The circuit does not include the visit to some Inca temples such as the Temple of the Sun or the Intihuatana because of its difficult access. However, it does allow, depending on each case, the visit to some sectors of the Inca enclosure. After a route of almost 2 hours, you leave the archaeological site with the help of the guide and the assistant. On the outside of Machu Picchu Only the visitor will be taken to the Tinkuy restaurant of the 5-star hotel Sanctuary Lodge, located next to Machu Picchu Only (just a few steps from the exit door).
Buffet lunch and return to Aguas Calientes
The buffet lunch is included in the tour. It is considered the best buffet in Cusco. It stands out for its comfortable and spacious facilities with several options, including the best of Peruvian cuisine. There you can enjoy dishes such as quinoa soup, avocado salad, causa rellena, menestras, a variety of meats (including alpaca meat), pastas, lomo saltado, huancaína potato, trout ceviche, and more. The buffet also includes a variety of desserts, breads, fruits, as well as hot and cold non-alcoholic beverages. After the delicious buffet lunch, the assistant and guide will help you board the Consettur ecological bus for the return trip from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes (approximately 30 30-minute route).
Return by Expedition train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo.
In the town of Aguas Calientes, the tourists will be transferred through the streets of the town to the train station. There, with the necessary assistance, they board the Expedition train of Peru Rail. The Consettur train ride takes 1 hour 40 minutes to the Ollantaytambo town station. The train does not have space for wheelchairs, but it does have comfortable seats, tables, and large windows. The train has assistance on board, as well as snacks and drinks.
Return to Cusco and end of the tour
In Ollantaytambo, always with the assistance of the guide and the guide’s assistant, we get off the train. Then you go a little further through the station to take the transport in a large tourist minivan. The final stretch lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes from Ollantaytambo to the city of Cusco. The tour ends with the descent and the farewell of the tourist at the door of his hotel in Cusco at approximately 8.30 pm.
