Tour itinerary
Pick up and transfer to Ollantaytambo station.
The ‘Tour Machu Picchu + Huchuy Picchu 1 day’ starts with the pick up of the tourist at the door of his hotel in Cusco at about 5 am. The tourist will board a spacious minivan for a short trip to the Wánchaq station in the historic center of Cusco. At the station, the visitor will board one of the Bimodal buses of the Peru Rail company. The trip lasts almost 2 hours traveling through beautiful Andean landscapes, such as Chinchero and Urubamba. The final destination is the train station of Ollantaytambo (2,792 masl).
Travel by train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes
In Ollantaytambo, there is free time to buy a snack or hot drink before boarding the train. The train is the Expedition service of Peru Rail, which includes: comfortable seats, tables, large windows, background music with tourist information, space for luggage, and personal attention on board. The train ride offers beautiful scenery along the Vilcanota River. The trip lasts 1 hour 40 minutes and ends at the station in the town of Aguas Calientes (called Machupicchu village because of its proximity to the Inca citadel).
Bus trip from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu
Aguas Calientes (2,040 m.a.s.l.) is a small town dedicated entirely to tourism. The visitor will have to walk about 3 minutes to get to the town’s bus station (Aguas Calientes does not have cabs since the place is small). Normally, before boarding the buses, you have to wait in line for about 10 minutes. Then you board the environmentally friendly Consettur buses. The bus ride is uphill through beautiful green mountains until you arrive at the entrance gate of Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu Tour (circuit 4)
Once at the entrance gate of Machu Picchu, the tourist will meet his tour guide. The guide is a professional who will accompany you on a tour through the archaeological site. Circuit 4 is the chosen one, which goes through the Inca constructions, such as the Temple of the Sun, the House of the Inca, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, and more. The circuit with the tour guide lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes in total. In the sector of the platforms, the tourists will be able to get beautiful pictures with the landscape of Machu Picchu in the background. At the gate of the Huchuy Picchu mountain, the guide will say goodbye so that the visitor can make the hike on his own.
Huchuy Picchu mountain hike
Huchuy Picchu is a mountain whose name, translated from the Quechua language, means ‘small mountain’. This summit is a slope of the great Huayna Picchu, so the route is simpler and suitable for visitors of all ages. The hike to the mountain is short. Climbing to the top takes 20 to 30 minutes on average. The route is by stone steps made by the Incas. The top of the mountain is 2,497 meters above sea level. From there, you have beautiful views of the archaeological site. The tourist will be able to get some of the best photos of the trip there. The downhill route takes approximately 20 minutes. At the exit gate of the Huchuy Picchu mountain, the visitor will be able to finish the tour of the Inca citadel by visiting the Temple of the Condor. In total, with the visit to Machu Picchu and Huchuy Picchu mountain, it is a visit of 4 hours on average.
Return by bus to the town of Aguas Calientes.
At the exit gate of Machu Picchu, the tourist must board the Consettur buses to return to the town of Aguas Calientes (30-minute trip). If the visitor added the buffet lunch at the Tinkuy restaurant, before descending, he/she should enjoy a delicious lunch in the dining room of the 5-star Sanctuary Lodge hotel (the only one located in front of Machu Picchu). In the town of Aguas Calientes, the visitor will have free time for lunch (not included in the tour). In this village, there are many tourist restaurants. Then you can stroll through the beautiful streets of the place.
Expedition train and bus trip to Cusco
The train station is located inside the handicraft market of Aguas Calientes. You should arrive at the station 30 minutes before the train departure time. The return trip is on the Expedition train of Peru Rail, which offers comfortable seats, tables, large windows, staff attention on board, sale of snacks or drinks, background music, as well as maximum security for the trip (background music, toilets, space for luggage). After a journey of 1 hour and 45 minutes, we arrive at the Ollantaytambo station. There the visitor must get off and, after a few steps, board one of Peru Rail’s Bimodal buses. These buses will take you back to the city of Cusco. The trip lasts almost 2 hours and ends at the Wánchaq station in the historic center of Cusco.
Final transfer to hotel in Cusco city.
At the Wánchaq station, an assistant will be waiting for you at the door for the final transfer to the door of your hotel in the city of Cusco. The tour ends at approximately 9 pm.
