Tour itinerary
From Cusco to Ollantaytambo by bus
The tour starts with the pick up of the tourist from the door of his hotel. The pick-up is valid for tourists staying in the historical center of the city. Most tourist hotels are in that area. If your hotel is not, it is recommended to contact us to arrange a meeting point. Pick-up is at approximately 5 am.
After pick-up, we will take a short minivan ride to the Wánchaq train station in the same city. There we will board the Peru Rail Bimodal bus. This trip takes 2 hours and leads from Cusco to Ollantaytambo train station. On the way, we will appreciate the beautiful landscapes of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
From Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes by train
Once at the Ollantaytambo train station (2,792 masl) we will have approximately 30 minutes to wait to board the train. Tourists can use the restrooms or buy coffee or snacks in the cafeteria of the station.
The train ride is on the Peru Rail Expedition service. This train is super comfortable with seats for everyone, space for suitcases or backpacks, tables, large windows, staff attention on board, background music with tourist information, and more. After a journey of approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, you arrive at the town of Aguas Calientes in the high jungle of Cusco.
From Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu by bus
The town of Aguas Calientes (2,040 meters above sea level) is also known as Machupicchu town because it is only 10 kilometers from Machu Picchu. The town is completely dedicated to tourism. There are cafes, hotels, restaurants, and all of excellent quality. However, the walk through the village will be later because first you have to walk about two minutes to the bus station that leads to Machu Picchu. Sometimes you have to wait in line for 5 to 20 minutes at the most. Then you take the bus that, in a comfortable ride with spectacular views of 30 minutes, leads to the entrance gate of Machu Picchu.
Tourist circuit through Machu Picchu
At the entrance gate of Machu Picchu, the guide will give us some time to access the toilets before entering. Then the whole group together will enter Machu Picchu (carry your passport or identity card). The first section is the most difficult because you have to climb stone steps for 15 to 30 minutes of walking. The reward will be to reach the sector of the Guardian’s House where you get the classic photos of Machu Picchu. There, at the most famous point of Machu Picchu (2,430 meters above sea level), we will take a break to listen to the tour guide and also to get the dream photos of the Wonder of the World. The chosen circuit will be number 2. This circuit, the best of all, offers a visit to the main temples and enclosures such as the Temple of the Sun, the Sacred Plaza, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, and more. In total, it will be 2 hours and 30 minutes of visit to Machu Picchu. The guide will always be ready to answer any questions visitors may have.
Return to Aguas Calientes by bus and free time
Once at the exit gate of Machu Picchu, the group will meet to board the bus back to the town of Aguas Calientes. The trip takes only 30 minutes. In the town of Aguas Calientes, you will have about 2 hours on average for lunch (not included in the tour) or stroll freely through the beautiful streets of the town. If the tourist likes, he/she can be accompanied by a guide who will help to find the best restaurant or find a suitable souvenir. When the guide asks to go to the train station it will be time to board the return trip to Cusco.
Return to Ollantaytambo by train
The tourist must be at the Aguas Calientes train station 30 minutes before the train departure time. The guide, who will be accompanying the group, will provide the train departure time. This will be in the Peru Rail Expedition service. That is, it includes all the comfort on board with the option to buy snacks and drinks on board. The return trip to Ollantaytambo station takes 1 hour 40 minutes on average. At the Ollantaytambo train station, it is time to get off the train.
Back to Cusco by bus
At Ollantaytambo station, the group will have to walk for about 2 minutes to board the Peru Rail Bimodal bus. The trip will be similar to the outbound trip, going through the towns of Urubamba and Chinchero. It takes approximately 2 hours. At the end, you will arrive at the station of Wánchaq to the city of Cusco (at approximately 8.45 pm). At this station, an assistant will be waiting for you to board the transport that will take you to the door of your hotel in Cusco. The tour concludes with a farewell at approximately 9:00 pm.
