This is the 4-day Inca Trail tour

Tour itinerary

DAY 1: DEPARTURE FROM CUSCO AND OVERNIGHT STAY IN HUAYLLABAMBA

Pick up and travel to starting point

The first day of the tour begins with the pick up of the visitor from the door of his hotel in the city of Cusco at approximately 4 am. On board a tourist minivan we will travel to kilometer 82 of the railway in Ollantaytambo. There we will register each visitor and then get ready to start the hike.

Visit to Llactapata

The first section of the Inca Trail is ascending through roads surrounded by beautiful landscapes of the Vilcanota Valley. During the route we will be able to appreciate the archaeological site of Llactapata, the first on the route. The cooks and porters will take the lead to have a delicious lunch ready at the chosen campsite.

Overnight in Huayllabamba

After approximately 13 kilometers of walking we will arrive at Huayllabamba camp where we will have dinner and rest for the first night. The porters and the team will already have the campsites and the necessary equipment ready. Sleeping bag is not included, which is necessary on the route.

DAY 2: ASCENT TO THE WARMIWAÑUSCA PASS AND OVERNIGHT STAY IN PACAYMAYO

Ascent to the Warmiwañusca Pass

The second day is the most difficult of the route. After a delicious and nutritious breakfast at our base camp, we ascend through paths made up of stone steps until we arrive at the Warmiwañusca pass, the highest point of the route, at 4,215 meters above sea level. At the Warmiwañusca pass we will observe one of the most beautiful natural landscapes on the Inca Trail.

Lunch at Pacaymayo camp

After reaching the highest point of the hike, it is time to descend through stone stairways until we arrive at the Pacaymayo camp. The tour does not include walking sticks, which are important in these descending sections. At this camp we will stop to enjoy a refreshing tourist lunch.

Route to Chaquicocha and overnight stay

After lunch it is time to complete the hike, which that day will be 11 kilometers on average. It is an arduous route through ascending and descending paths. At the Chaquicocha camp we will arrive at our resting place under the stars. The tour includes dinner and campsites ready to regain energy after a long journey.

DAY 3: VISIT TO PHUYUPATAMARCA AND OVERNIGHT STAY IN WIÑAYHUAYNA

Visit to Sayacmarca

The third day is one of the most interesting as you will visit up to three Inca archaeological sites along the route. In addition, the landscapes will become green due to the proximity to the high tropical jungle of Cusco. The day begins with a nutritious breakfast at the base camp. Then begins a route through roads surrounded by mysterious fog until arriving at the archaeological site of Sayacmarca, surrounded by clouds and with beautiful views of the Vilcanota Valley.

Visit to Phuyupatamarca

We continue with the route with ascending, descending and flat stretches, always along the beautiful Inca roads (qhapac ñan). Through a rocky road with a last uphill stretch we arrive at the archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca, where a few visitors camp. However, we will continue along the Inca trails to get closer and closer to Machu Picchu.

Visit to Wiñayhuayna and overnight stay

That third day, after approximately 10 kilometers of trekking, we will arrive at Wiñayhuayna camp where we will have lunch and rest from the arduous days of trekking. In the afternoon, always accompanied by our professional tour guide, we will visit the archaeological site of Wiñayhuayna, with a beauty similar to Machu Picchu, which is only 5 kilometers away. In the evening it is time to have dinner and say goodbye to our team of porters and cooks (voluntary tips). It is the last day of camping before arriving at Machu Picchu.

DAY 4: VISIT TO MACHU PICCHU AND RETURN TO CUSCO BY TRAIN

Caminata al Intipunku

On the fourth day, breakfast will be a box breakfast necessary to start the trek early and arrive at Machu Picchu just at dawn. This last route will be by flat roads, with few ascents until arriving at the Intipunku or Sun Gate. This was the entrance and control gate to Machu Picchu during Inca times. From there, if the weather is favorable, we will have a wonderful and memorable first view of the Inca citadel. This first view is an experience that can only be lived through the Inca Trail.

Visit to Machu Picchu

After visiting and taking pictures in the Intipunku we will descend by Inca trails that in 20 minutes lead to the archaeological site of Machu Picchu. There the tourist will be able to get the classic photo in the sector of the Guardian’s House. Then continues the tourist route through the main stone constructions, such as the Temple of the Sun, the Main Temple, the Temple of the 3 Windows, the Sacred Rock, the Temple of the Condor, the agricultural sector and more. The visit will always be accompanied by a professional tour guide who will also help you get the best pictures in the best spots of the archaeological site. In total the route through Machu Picchu takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. If the visitor wishes to take the optional hike up Huayna Picchu mountain or Machu Picchu mountain, the corresponding ticket must be booked in advance.

Return to Cusco by train

At the exit gate of Machu Picchu take the bus that in 30 minutes leads to the town of Aguas Calientes (Machupicchu village). If the visitor booked the buffet lunch at the 5 star hotel Sanctuary Lodge (optional on the tour), you must stay next to the archaeological site to enter the restaurant and enjoy the buffet service. Otherwise, you will have to return to Aguas Calientes and have lunch on your own in one of the many high quality tourist restaurants there. In the town of Aguas Calientes, at the time indicated by the tour guide, you will take the Expedition tourist train that will take you to the town of Ollantaytambo in 1 hour and 40 minutes. The trip is very pleasant with snacks and drinks on board. In Ollantaytambo it is time to take the tourist bus that in almost 2 hours will take you back to the city of Cusco. There an assistant will wait for the tourist for the final transfer to the door of your hotel where the tour ends at approximately 9 pm.
