Tour itinerary

Pick up and transfer to Ollantaytambo station.

The ‘Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu 1 day tour’ starts with the pick up of the visitor from the door of his hotel between 2.30 am and 2.45 am. Aboard a spacious minivan, a short route is made to the Wánchaq station in the center of Cusco city. There you board the Peru Rail Bimodal bus to Ollantaytambo train station. The trip takes almost 2 hours and goes through the beautiful landscapes of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Travel by train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes

At Ollantaytambo station, the visitor will have some free time for last-minute shopping (it is recommended to bring sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and a rain poncho) or try a snack or hot drink before boarding the train. The trip is on Peru Rail’s Expedition train. The train offers comfortable seats, tables, large windows, background music with tourist information, luggage space, and staff attention on board. During the trip, the tourists will appreciate the beautiful Andean landscapes. After a journey of 1 hour 45 minutes, you will arrive at the station of Aguas Calientes town (also called Machu Picchu town).

Bus trip from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu

The town of Aguas Calientes (2,040 meters above sea level) is famous for its tropical mountain geography, full of green mountains. When getting off the train, the visitor must walk for two or three minutes to the town’s bus station. The place is so small that there are no cabs or private vehicles. Everywhere can be reached on foot so it is impossible to get lost. At the bus station, there is usually a 10-minute queue before boarding the Consettur bus. Everyone rides in their comfortable seats. After a 30-minute trip through beautiful landscapes of high mountains full of vegetation, you arrive at the entrance gate of Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu Tour (circuit 4)

At the entrance gate of Machu Picchu, the visitor must show his ticket ‘Machupicchu + Huaynapicchu’. The ticket allows you to do circuit 4. This circuit covers Inca constructions in the lower part. Highlights include the Temple of the Sun, the House of the Inka, the sector of the platforms, the Water Fountains, the Sacred Rock, and more. This circuit takes about 1 hour and the visitor should do it without the company of the tour guide who will be waiting at the entrance gate to Huayna Picchu (which is located next to the Sacred Rock). At the gate of Huayna Picchu, the tourist will meet a private guide to begin the exciting hike to the Huayna Picchu mountain.

Huayna Picchu mountain hike with private guide

The hike to Huayna Picchu mountain is accompanied by a specialized tour guide. The guide will help you complete the hike in complete safety and provide you with all the necessary information on the route. The ascent hike covers two kilometers through stone steps built by the Incas. Each step has a slope of 30 degrees and even 60 degrees in the most complicated sections. In these difficult paths, there are safety ropes to protect the visitor. The ascent can take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the physical condition of each visitor. The summit of Huayna Picchu is 2,720 meters above sea level. From there the visitor will have a privileged view of all the beautiful geography surrounding Machu Picchu. After the photos and the necessary information, the descent begins by the same route. The walk takes less time because it is descending, but you have to be careful because of the stone steps. The return route takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Once outside the gate of Huayna Picchu, the visitor will have to leave Machu Picchu visiting before some Inca constructions such as the Temple of the Condor.

Return by bus to Aguas Calientes

At the exit gate of Machu Picchu, a few steps away, is the bus station that in 30 minutes drives tourists back to the town of Aguas Calientes. In the town of Aguas Calientes, the tourist has some free time for lunch (not included in the tour) and stroll through the beautiful streets of the village. About 30 minutes before the departure time of the train, the visitor must be at the village station (located inside the handicraft market).

Expedition train trip to Ollantaytambo and bus Cusco

The train departs punctually at the time scheduled on your ticket. The return service is also Expedition of Peru Rail. This service includes comfortable seats, tables, large windows, staff attention on board, sale of snacks or drinks, background music, and maximum security for the trip. After a 1 hour 45 minute Expedition train ride, you will arrive at the Ollantaytambo train station in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. At this station, the visitor must walk a few steps to board one of the Peru Rail buses. This final trip takes almost 2 hours and ends at the Wánchaq station in the city of Cusco.

Final transfer to hotel in Cusco

Upon arrival at the Wánchaq station in the city of Cusco, the visitor will be met by an assistant. This will lead him to the tourist transport for the final transfer to the door of your hotel in Cusco. The tour ends at the door of the visitor’s hotel at approximately 9:00 pm.
